{"id":7937,"date":"2026-03-24T13:27:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T17:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/?p=7937"},"modified":"2026-03-24T13:27:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T17:27:22","slug":"what-is-your-ot-path","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/what-is-your-ot-path\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Your OT Path?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-150x78.png 150w, https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-1536x804.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.ottoolkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/March-2026-Blog-2048x1072.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Are you considering specializing in one area of OT practice?\u00a0 Let\u2019s explore some of the pros and cons and how you could approach the transition.<\/p>\n<p>There are many populations and conditions that an OT can focus on as a specialty including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pediatric OT<\/li>\n<li>Lymphedema<\/li>\n<li>Mental Health<\/li>\n<li>Low Vision<\/li>\n<li>Gerontology<\/li>\n<li>Physical Rehabilitation<\/li>\n<li>Hand Therapy<\/li>\n<li>Driving Rehab<\/li>\n<li>Ergonomics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By choosing an area of OT practice to focus your career, you may reap some advantages.\u00a0 When you have the training and clinical hours required for a certification, higher earnings and increased job security are more likely.\u00a0 An additional certification can also open new career paths and new practice settings including the opportunities to participate in research efforts.\u00a0 If you select an area of specialization based on a personal interest or passion, you can increase your job satisfaction and minimize the possibility of burnout.\u00a0 Additional certifications can also increase your professional credibility and recognition from other healthcare providers on your team.<\/p>\n<p>How do you pursue an OT specialization?\u00a0 This career path can require quite an investment including several years of specialized practice and additional training, so my number one tip is to work as a generalist first and take some time to explore the specialty you are interested in pursuing.\u00a0 Shadow another OT, interview members of a healthcare team that work with that specialty, find a mentor in the field, attend networking opportunities or volunteer in that setting.\u00a0 Another fantastic way to explore specialties is during fieldwork.\u00a0 If you are still a student, strive to plan a fieldwork experience as wide ranging as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have made a decision about the area that is right for you remember the path to a special certification can be a long one so having a strategic course of action is important.\u00a0 Many OTs seek a position in the area they wish to pursue to start accumulating supervised or independent clinical hours treating patients in that setting.\u00a0 Keep detailed records of the hours worked based on the certifying organization\u2019s standards.\u00a0 While building hours, look for additional training or courses you can take to increase your knowledge base and meet the requirements.\u00a0\u00a0 Some specialties are supported by post profession residencies or fellowships which can combine mentorship with concentrated clinical hours.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a downside to specializing?\u00a0 You are going to spend a great deal of time and money to achieve your goal, so be sure you are pursuing the path for the right reasons, In addition, your focus means there may be less variety in daily cases \u2013 is that right for your personality?\u00a0 There will be pressure to be the expert in your chosen area throughout your career and to handle the most complex cases.\u00a0 Will that be a satisfying challenge?<\/p>\n<p>Final thought\u2026.there are also many benefits to staying an OT generalist.\u00a0 That was my career path and I saw patients with a wide variety of needs in home health.\u00a0 I loved the variety and flexibility that being anOT generalist offered, so give some serious thought to your choice and then go for it.\u00a0 Patients need occupational therapists that can meet their needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you considering specializing in one area of OT practice?\u00a0 Let\u2019s explore some of the pros and cons and how you could approach the transition.
