I was delighted to be asked to provide technical resources for the occupational therapy students in HOSA’s annual Skills Competition for high schoolers! With 260,000 members and 54 chartered associations, HOSA is a student-led organization providing leadership development, motivation and recognition for students in middle school, high school and college who are pursuing health careers.
HOSA’s work builds and strengthens the pipeline of prepared, motivated health professionals at a time when demand in health care careers is growing. Having students graduate with both the required technical medical knowledge along with interpersonal skills, gives employers well-rounded and prepared employees.
With 82 industry approved competitive events, HOSA motivates and energizes members with competitions that draw on classroom education and practical experience to showcase their knowledge and skills. Winners at the local level continue through state, regional and national level competitions. HOSA also promotes the powerful synergy that develops when HOSA is leveraged as an instructional tool in the curriculum. Instructors that integrate HOSA into their classroom understand the importance of not just teaching technical skills but fostering growth in leadership and people skills.
HOSA’s website has a wealth of information related to the pursuit of a healthcare career including news, internships, scholarships, publications and a video library. Beyond the competitive events, HOSA also hosts state conferences and an annual International Leadership conference.
Now, more than ever, the health care industry needs smart, dedicated professionals to serve all patients with the best care possible each and every day. So, check out the great work at HOSA and help celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary with the theme “Champions of Change”.
